Another perspective. We bought 21 day Green Passes at a Japan based travel agency at their office in Vancouver, BC. We were issued vouchers and the day after arrival in Japan went to Shinjuku Station and received our passes. We had searched our trains and printed out each journey separately. I used the Jorudan website to plan my rail itineraries. The JR agent at Shinjuku issued all 18 of our reservations on the spot. We arrived during Golden Week and we were able to book everything in one go. We were booking Green seats and on only one occasion we were issued seats apart on a journey using a Sakura train which only has 28 Green seats. All others were adjacent. We payed a lower cost than booking our passes online and experienced no difficulty in reserving the trains we wanted upon arrival at Japan.
